Central to the study of cultural performances is the consideration of performance patronage. In India, as elsewhere, performing artists insprire patronage and patrons influence the arts and artists they support. The papers in this volume move from cultural performance as an object to the process of production as a dialogue between patron and performer, between sponsoring and practising the performing arts. Using selected performance genres, the authors show how performance traditions, changing patrons, and differing intentions can influence artistic productions and their perceived meanings.
Contributors to this volume are scholars and artists who have studied intensely and written about India`s performing arts.
