William Henry Valentine was born in 1856 in London. Very little is known about his personal life. He was simply a carpenter with North Metropolitan Tramways in London where he spent most of his life and utilised his spare time in acquiring numismatic knowledge. Later in his life he also became a coin dealer, He started writing books towards the end of his life.
Though Valentine was interested in coins since beginning which gained momentum when he found Charles II farthing but his actual journey with coins started when he discovered some coins while working, as he was unaware of them he took them to British museum where most of them were identified as Indian coins. Valentine taught himself Indian languages and became one of the experts in the field of numismatic.
The Copper Coins of India is the 2nd book authored by Valentine in his own hand writing with hand drawn illustrations drawn from rubbings taken from the coins. The first edition of The Copper Coins of India consists of 4 handwritten copies. Later in 1914 it was formally printed by Spink which again came with 2nd reprint in 1971. Since then the same handwritten copy has been republished by many publishers.
Though its been more than a century since the original book was published, still it retains the charisma and holds an important place in every coin collector’s library.
