This volume is a part of People of India Project. It is an ethnographic survey of forty-two communities of Chandigarh. Chandigarh and its villages are an extension of the Malwa region of Punjab, and its communities are part of the bio-cultural structure of north-western India. Traits conspicuous for Chandigarh are higher levels of consumption, alcoholism and non-vegetarianism, and linguistic heterogeneity. With economic growth much occupational diversification is reported among communities and there is a larger spread of developmental benefits as perceived by them. This study would serve as a useful reference tool for all those involved in development activities as well as anthropologists, sociologists and social historians.
